Nashua, N.H
. Hillary Clinton (Photo Daniella Zalcman) beat Barack Obama in an unexpectedly close New Hampshire Democratic primary on Tuesday Jan. 8. The former first lady won 39% of the vote, with the Illinois Senator winning 37%. John Edwards finished third with 17%. Hillary Clinton held on to her lead throughout a tense night to complete an incredible and remarkable comeback, after finishing at a disappointing third place in the Iowa caucuses 5 days earlier.

“I felt like we all spoke from our hearts, and I am so gratified you responded,” Mrs. Clinton said in remarks to her supporters, who had gathered on the night of Jan. 8 in Manchester. “Now together, let’s give America the kind of comeback that New Hampshire has just given me.” The Granite State handed the Clintons another comeback, sixteen years after Bill Clinton saved his own presidential bid in Dover, N.H. After a poor showing in Iowa, Bill Clinton had finished a strong second in New Hampshire and earned the “Comeback Kid” nickname. That result had literally launched his campaign and set him on the way to the White House.

Mrs Clinton’s victory surprised some in her camp. Before the votes had been counted, Clinton’s campaign had appeared to be bracing for a second straight defeat at the hands of Obama. Her aides were apparently considering whether to effectively concede Nevada on Jan. 19 and South Carolina on Jan. 26 in order to focus on the 22-state Super Tuesday on Feb. 5.

Hillary Clinton also stunned some of her own supporters. Rebecca Graffy, a 19-year old student from Concord, had voted for the former first lady but showed up on Tuesday night in Nashua to attend Obama’s rally. “I think that’s it, she said. Obama will win it”. Mrs Clinton proved her wrong.

In Nashua, Barack Obama opened his speech promising he is still “fired up”. Polls had given him a big lead over Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire. The Illinois Senator tried to recover quickly from the stunning defeat at the hands of his rival, and to inspire his supporters. “We know the battle ahead will be long,” Mr. Obama said on Tuesday night. “But always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.”

Outside the South Nashua High School, Derek Bonia, a 23-year old Obama supporter, was very disappointed. “ I feel I could maybe have given a little bit more of my time on weekend to volunteer for Senator Obama, he said. But I still think he can win it and become the next U.S. president”.

On the Republican side, Arizona Sen. John McCain resurrected his own presidential bid and won the New Hampshire primary with 38% of the vote. He beat former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts by 8 points. Mike Huckabee, the winner of the Iowa caucuses, finished third with 12% of the vote. Giuliani had to settle for a distant fourth place with only 9% of the vote.

The battleground now shifts to Michigan, a State Mitt Romney must now win to save his presidential bid after being beaten twice in Iowa and Michigan.
