Swiss man pleads guilty in drug case

  • Andrea V., one of two young Swiss men charged in a federal drug case in the US, has decided to plead guilty on September 20.

  • Thomas F., the other Swiss man arraigned in that case, dropped his public defender and hired a private lawyer.

New York. Up to September 20, they had face the US Justice together. But on that day, Thomas F. and Andrea V., who share a cell at the Alexandria Jail, have decided to go separate ways. Andrea V. pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to import ecstasy to the US. The young man from Lausanne, Switzerland, who has been incarcerated since his arrest on June 1 2006 in Amsterdam, will be sentenced in December.

Thomas Frischknecht, a former professional bike rider also from Lausanne, has decided to replace his public defender to hire a lawyer from private firm Akin Gump. He now has a motion hearing at the end of October. His new lawyer declined to say if Mr F. would plead guilty citing her need to protect her client’s confidentiality.

Thomas Frischknecht and Andrea V. were arrested on June 1 2006 in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s “Operation Director’s Cut” after a two-year undercover investigation into international money laundering.

That same day, Alexandre B., 36, of Los Angeles, California, and Geneva, and Bruno E., 45, of Los Angeles, were caught in a hotel in Arlington. According to US authorities, Alexandre B. and Bruno E. arranged in February 2006 the shipment to the United States of a package containing 10,000 Ecstasy pills obtained in the Netherlands and sent by Mr F. and Mr V.. Alexandre B. pleaded guilty and was sentenced on January 8 to 240 months in prison. Bruno E. will spend the next 15 years of his life in a federal penitentiary.

Mr F. and Mr V. were extradited to the United States on August 24 2007 and were arraigned on September 4.
